Dr. Joel Morganstern Memorial Scholarship Fund

It is with great pleasure and much pride that the family of Dr. Joel Morganstern has formed the Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Joel graduated JFK Bellmore in the year 1968. Education was always important to Joel.  He always believed that “The cream would always rise to the top.”  It is with his belief in mind, that we have started this scholarship to help other JFK students with their “rise to the top”.

Joel went on to become a Dr. of Veterinary Medicine, married and had two children.

The memories of Joel,  as you can imagine are all very special and personal. We would like to say that Joel was a gentle soul, a gentle man and a gentleman, a caring and giving friend, a great brother, brother in law, son, son in law, uncle, father and husband.

We all miss him, and we hope that the recipient of this scholarship will make us proud in his memory.

I want to thank Ronnie Steiger and the Bellmore JFK Alumni, Inc Board & Committee for helping me get the scholarship going in JFK in memory of my late husband, Jimmy Director.
I am looking forward to giving scholarships every year in honor of Jimmy, who was a wonderful husband and father to both of my sons.
It will be an honor for me and my sons to present these scholarships to students in the high school that we all graduated from.

The Carol Kestenbaum Foundation

Carol was a 2005 graduate of JFK High School in Bellmore . The Foundation was created in Memory of Carol Fay Kestenbaum. We strive to carry on her dreams. Carol was an education major and her desire to work with children inspires us to support programs that improve the lives of our youth, one child at a time. Through the Foundation’s supporters, we are gratefully able to continue Carol’s legacy.

The Carol Kestenbaum Foundation is dedicated to helping young people build strong self esteem; empowering them to make positive choices. Through Carol’s Circle, a year round program run by Project Morry (http://projectmorry.org/) girls learn how to navigate the complicated messages that society sends them. Building confidence and strong sense of self is the focus of this program.

CKF also supports the Long Island Crisis Center’s Community Education Program. Trained counselors visit High Schools to speak about suicide prevention; and we are saving lives. This year the program was expanded to include a workshop on Cyber Bullying Prevention. http://www.longislandcrisiscenter.org/

Billy Garfield Scholarship Fund
September 14, 2012 7:30
Long Island Marriot

Hello,

I wanted to let the alumni know about the Scholarship Fund Event we are holding in memory of Bellmore JFK graduate Billy Garfield.

Billy Garfield passed away on September 1, 2011 at age 32.
Billy was a leader, an athlete, an animal lover; a gentle giant who always looked out for the little guy. Above all else, he was a generous friend.

To honor his life and the way he lived, his friends and family have set up The Billy Garfield Scholarship Fund to raise money to send kids in need to summer camp. The Fund has already presented Teammate Awards to student athletes from Kennedy High School and Merrick Avenue Junior High School who demonstrate great character both on and off the field.

Truly great people like Billy are hard to find, difficult to leave and absolutely impossible to forget. Billy inspired others, made us laugh and gave all of us so much. Our goal is to take our loss and turn it into something positive, something Billy would be proud of.

This past summer the Billy G Fund sent 14 kids with limited resources to summer camp and sports programs.

As fall approaches we are looking to build upon the early success as we are holding an event on Friday evening September 14, 7:30pm at the Long Island Marriot. For more information contact :Billygfund@gmail.com

Much appreciated,
